Two years later – Triay is world number one again
It was in April 2023 that Ariana Sanchez and Paula Josemaria took over the number one spot in the world rankings, after beating Gemma Triay and Alejandra Salazar in the final of the Granada Open. Since then, they’ve stayed on top for over two years – but today, Gemma Triay becomes the new world number one.
After her time with Alejandra Salazar, Triay teamed up with Marta Ortega, then with Claudia Fernandez. But it was with Delfi Brea that she finally reached her goal – taking back the number one position she lost more than two years ago.
When Triay and Brea reached their seventh straight final, and Sanchez and Josemaria lost in the semifinals, Triay climbed back to the top – this time as the sole number one.
– I don't give much importance to number 1, at least until December, Triay said, according to Premier Padel.
– What matters is to be satisfied with the level we continue to show, how our training continues to pay off, and how we continue to follow our game plan and get the results we are looking for.
Triay is just 80 points ahead – which means the number one spot could change again after this week’s tournament in Argentina.
