Two years later: Gemma Triay challenges for the world number one spot
Delfi Brea and Gemma Triay have had a dream start to their new partnership. With three titles in the first four tournaments, they are now seriously challenging for the top of the world rankings.
World number ones Ariana Sánchez and Paula Josemaría still have a clear lead in the seedings, with more than 7,500 points ahead. They are likely to stay there for a while.
But in the official world rankings, their position is more at risk – and it’s Gemma Triay who is closing in. Triay was last ranked world number one alongside Alejandra Salazar before Sánchez and Josemaría took over in the 2023 season.
At the start of this season, Triay was 2,950 points behind. That gap is now down to 2,160 points – and with another good tournament this week, she could get even closer.
If Triay and Brea win this week's event, where the winners earn 1,000 points and the runners-up get 600, the gap will become even smaller. And after that comes a Major – where the difference between winning and reaching the final is a big 800 points.
The world number one spot is definitely within reach for Gemma Triay.
