New boycott expected – no top 100 men’s players registered
This week’s Premier Padel tournament in Gijón is missing all top 100 players on the men’s side. Now, another boycott seems likely, as none of the top male players have registered for the tournament in Mexico.
The registration deadline was extended, and letters were sent to the players, according to several Spanish media. Despite this, the situation was not resolved, and no top 100 men’s players chose to take part in the Premier Padel tournament in Gijón.
A week later, the players' union released a statement clarifying that they had not encouraged a boycott of the P2 tournament. They stated that the players want to compete but not at any price.
Now, attention turns to the year’s third Premier Padel tournament, held in Mexico. The registration deadline closes today at 5:00 PM, and no top 100 men’s players are on the entry list.
When Padel Alto reported on the situation on Monday, three top 100 players – Tino Libaak, Juan Tello, and Clement Geens – were registered, but they have now withdrawn.
With only hours left before the deadline, everything points to another boycott of a P2 tournament on the men’s side.
On the women’s side, all top players except Bea Gonzalez and Claudia Fernandez have signed up.
Miami P1 starts a week later, on March 17. For that tournament, the top male players are registered.
