Jon Sanz on the breakup and new partnership: "He was my first choice"
Jon Sanz and Coki Nieto delivered their best performance as a pair when they won the Tour Finals. Shortly after, it was announced that the duo would part ways. Now, Jon Sanz shares his thoughts on the decision and his future with his new partner.
Jon Sanz and Coki Nieto achieved an impressive performance at the Tour Finals where they not only reached the final but also defeated the world number ones, Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia, to secure the title.
Despite their success, the pair decided to end their collaboration. In an interview with the Spanish newspaper Relevo, Jon Sanz discusses the decision.
– Coki and I have a strong friendship, we are very close. We’ve both worked hard to maintain a consistent level. Sometimes, we’ve had moments where we got angry with each other, but that’s normal when you’ve been competing together for a long time and spending many hours with someone. The truth is, the results didn’t go our way, and we decided not to continue playing together, even though we get along very well. In the end, it’s nothing strange, this is work.
He continues:
– We made the decision before the Master Final, when partner changes began happening, and we saw that we could have other options for this season. We talked after winning the title, but we agreed to stick with the original decision. I believe it’s the right choice, and I think it will be good for us.
When asked about a potential reunion with Coki Nieto, he replied:
– My door will always be open for Coki. In the future, I’d love to play with him again.
“He was my first choice”
It is now confirmed that Jon Sanz will partner with Momo Gonzalez for the upcoming season. Sanz reveals that Gonzalez was his first choice.
– He’s a player I’ve always liked. A few years ago, I was asked who I thought would be my perfect partner, and I mentioned two names: Coki and Momo. When we decided to part ways with Coki, Momo was my first choice. I really like how he plays, and I think he’s a fantastic player. His playing style suits me, and his way of being can help me a lot. In the end, I need to be happy, and I believe I can be happy with Momo.
He adds:
– I received calls from players with a similar ranking to mine, and from others with a lower ranking. There were options I liked and considered, but it’s true that Momo was my first choice, even before he called to ask if we should play together.
