Triay after the breakup: "The Hexagon Cup was the decision-maker"

ANNONS

After the controversial breakup with her partner, Gemma Triay spoke for the first time and revealed the main reasons that led her to abandon her project with Marta Ortega just a few days before the start of the Premier Padel season.

The former world number 1 gave an interview to Marca in which she pointed out that the decision was purely and exclusively due to sporting reasons: "we were coming from bad feelings in the last tournaments and I felt that I was not getting the best version out of Marta, nor mine either."

Furthermore, Triay surprised by ensuring that she had been contemplating the breakup for several months, but that after finishing the 2023 season, she wanted to give the project one last chance. However, after falling in the Hexagon Cup last week in the group stage, Gemma was finally convinced and took the definitive step.

"At the Hexagon I made the decision, yes, but nothing happened at all, simply what I said before, that in the return to competition that blockage was reconfirmed which did not allow us to compete and did not allow us to enjoy either. Perhaps it was the last straw."

Gemma confirmed that the P1 in Riyadh will be her last tournament alongside Martita, but that until then they will no longer train together. Triay emphasized that her relationship with Ortega off the court is very good and that they will compete during that week in the best possible way.

Triay: ”We told each other face to face”

Finally, the Minorcan took the opportunity to respond to those who have compared this separation with the one she had with Alejandra Salazar. On that occasion, it was not a sporting issue, but a personal wear and tear in the relationship. According to Gemma, it is a closed and more than resolved issue today:

"With Ale, it wasn't because of her elbow injury or performance, and luckily we already had a chat. It was much better, we told each other face to face what had bothered us about each other, and it's better not to end badly. The world is very small, we see each other every day to ignore each other."

From the second competition of the year, we will have a new couple on the women's ranking list. World number three Gemma Triay has registered for the Qatar Major with 17-year-old Claudia Fernández.
