Tapia on the intense season: ”You have to be mentally strong”
An intense season is coming to an end. In an interview with La Tercera, world number one Agustín Tapia talks about the season and the goal for 2024.
Agustín Tapia and Arturo Coello have won ten WPT tournaments and four Premier Padel tournaments this season. This has also resulted in the pair taking over the top spot in the world rankings. In an interview with La Tercera, Tapia talks about the incredible season.
— From the first day we stepped onto the court together, it was as if we had known each other for a long time. It was true that there were all the doubts about our collaboration because nobody knew how we would play or how we would work. There were people who believed in the project and others who did not, Tapia tells La Tercera.
He continues:
— A week before the tournaments started we tried playing matches and it didn't go well, but once the first tournament started it was completely different. Honestly, I couldn't have imagined that we would do this well.
Tapia: "Every week you do the same routine"
It has been a long season with competitions almost every week. The world number ones started the season in the best possible way but had a harder time in the autumn.
— Every week you do the same routine to play the matches, so it's a bit tiring. You have to be very strong mentally. The idea is to find motivation game by game, knowing that you can lose in the first round.
Agustín Tapia also says that there is always room for improvement. Next year, he hopes to travel less.
— You are always looking to improve. I think we reached a very high level of padel in some tournaments this year, but the most difficult thing is to get back to the hunger we had at the beginning of the year.
He continues:
— I know the team knows it's a bit tiring travelling so much, playing all the matches, leaving home for weeks and being away. But it's all about trying to find the motivation. Our goal now is to regain that hunger and to keep it for a longer period of time, it's very difficult.
