Young Spanish talents crowned in Alicante
In an exciting and high-level final, the young talents Edu Alonso and Juan Luis Esbri were crowned champions of the World Padel Tour Open Alicante 2023.
The tournament's breakthrough pairing in Alicante, Edu Alonso (22) and Juanlu Esbri (22), pulled off an incredible comeback to beat the experienced Gonzalo Rubio and Javi Ruiz 2/6, 6/4, 6/4 in a match that kept the spectators on the edge of their seats.
Rubio and Ruiz entered the court with determination, and in less than half an hour they took the first set by 6/2, showing an overwhelming superiority over their rivals. However, Alonso and Esbri didn't give up and showed the great style of play that took them to the final, levelling the score in a closer second set.
In the third set, the action was even more exciting and evenly matched, but the final break came in the ninth game in favour of Alonso and Esbri, who were able to defend the advantage with their serve to take the long-awaited title.
"I have no words to thank you for this incredible week. I've never dreamed of something so big, I'm very happy," said an emotional Alonso after the match. For his part, Esbri, who was named the MVP of the match, added: "I want to apologise to my teammate, because I've had a bad start to the year and I needed to give him this as a gift".
With this victory, Esbri and Alonso sealed an outstanding participation in the Alicante Open, beating the number one, three, five and six pairings in the tournament on their way to the title.
