Champions of Alicante — First title for the team
Marta Ortega and Sofía Araujo won their first title as a pairing after beating Riera and Icardo in the final of the Alicante Open in two sets, which were decided in a tie-break.
The final of the World Padel Tour Alicante Open saw the tournament's favourite pairing, Sofía Araujo and Marta Ortega, take on the Spanish-Argentine pairing of Virginia Riera and Tamara Icardo.
In a very close match, it was the team formed by Marta Ortega and Sofía Araujo who managed to prevail over their rivals, thanks to their determination at key moments.
Throughout the match, both teams struggled to hold their serve and the score was very changeable. Finally, after a battle of over two and a half hours, Araujo and Ortega came away with the victory by 7/6 and 7/6, taking the final of the second Open 500 of the season.
"Defined by details"
Sofia Araujo highlighted the mental strength of the team, who came back from tough matches throughout the tournament: "We had the objective of winning, even though we knew it would be very complicated. There were very difficult matches in this tournament, but those are the matches we value the most as a team," said the Portuguese.
Meanwhile, Marta Ortega commented: "It was a match defined by details, the tie-breaks were very close and it could have gone either way".
The World Padel Tour Alicante Open is the first title for the pair of Ortega and Araujo, who started playing together a little over a month ago.
