After the separation: ”I didn't expect it, I thought we were going to continue”

Following Álex Ruiz's decision to leave Momo González, the Malaga-born backhand spoke for the first time about the split in an interview with Marca.
— I didn't expect it, Gonzalez says.

The break-up between Navarro and Tello resulted in many changes of partners within the circuit. One of them was Momo González and Álex Ruiz. After receiving a call from Juan Tello to form a new partnership, Alex Ruiz decided to leave his current partner to team up with the Argentine player.

In an interview with Marca newspaper, Momo González talked about how he reacted to the news of his (former) partner's decision.

— I didn't expect it. I thought we were going to continue. Still, it's a completely understandable decision because (Tello) is a player he likes and believes can achieve better results. This is the sport, it's work, and if you see that you can improve with another partner, you go for it because you're looking for your benefit, Momo said.

Ruiz and González had positioned themselves as one of the strongest pairs on the circuit. According to Momo Gonzalez, the duo demonstrated remarkable growth and aspirations for great things.

— I think our playing styles matched well; we would have done well together. I don't know if we would have done better than the Ruiz-Tello or Yanguas-Momo partnership now. If there has been a change, it's because he believes he will do better, and that's it. It's no big deal.

"We were united."

The pair had managed to achieve a unique relationship both on and off the court. This was immediately transmitted to the public, who sympathized with them quickly. The news of the separation caused social media to quickly flood with comments lamenting the breakup of the Malaga duo.

— For the fans, it's normal, but what they saw from us was not a lie. We radiated a lot of joy, and it was clear that we were united. Perhaps it was a shock to the fans for that reason, and that's logical.

González now chooses the young Spanish talent Mike Yanguas as a new partner.

— We started looking at different options, and I started calling around to see if I could find a good project and partner, and I think I've achieved that."

Momo Gonzalez will debut with Yanguas this Thursday as the top-seeded couple in the WPT Open 500 in Reus.
