Chaos after refereeing scandal — celebrated the title twice

ANNONS

A real scandal occurred in the final of the Chile Padel Open. Agustin Tapia and Arturo Coello celebrated the title, and the referee ended the match.
The problem? The referee had said the wrong result in the score before, and the match continued for another hour.

It all arose from a situation at 5-3 to Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia and at the score of 30-30 in the second set against Juan Lebron and Ale Galan. Coello then had a volley that seemed to go in. The team took the point for granted; the scoreboard read 40-30 and thus had two tournament points.

But the referee either said the wrong results in the speakers or judged the ball out because he said 30-40 without anyone reacting on the court.

In the next point, Agustin Tapia hit a smash out of the court, dropped the racket, and cheered as if they had won the tournament. The referee said: "Game, set and match."

But Alejandro Galan then points out that the referee judged out Coello's volley. The referee changed his mind, and the match continued, leaving Tapia/Coello and the spectators onsite furious at the decision. TV viewers also did not see any replays of the disputed point.

Took the match to a third set

Instead, it was a golden point, which Lebron and Galan won.

"I think the referee made a mistake because I think the volley was in, and maybe by mistake, he said 30-40 instead of 40-30. Therefore it should be a golden point. Galan is right," the commentator Nicolás Quarles van Ufford said.

Lebron and Galan turned the set around and won. The match, which the referee had declared over, went on for another hour before Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia won the third set 7-5 after having a match point against them.

After the match, Tapia stood with his finger pointing to his head and said that the team, which is undefeated so far in this year's World Padel Tour, is mentally strong. In three tournaments, they have won as many titles.

Next up is the Paraguay Open next week before the circuit comes to Spain and Reus.
