Qatar shocker — Gonzalez and Ruiz topple number ones

Malaga's Alex Ruiz and Momo Gonzalez pulled off the surprise of the tournament by taking out the world number one pairing in the quarterfinals of the Premier Padel Qatar Major.

A huge surprise hit Doha when Alejandro Galan and Juan Lebron were eliminated in the quarterfinals at the opening Premier Padel tournament of the year.

They were defeated by Alex Ruiz and Momo Gonzalez, the number seven seeded pairing, who played a near perfect match to knock the number ones out of the competition.

Lebron and Galan had an inconsistent game - making many unforced errors - and Momo and Alex did not miss the opportunity. The Malaga pair kept up the intensity throughout the match, and finally took the encounter with a score of 6/4 7/6.

"Our coach has been a great strategist. To neutralise the number ones, you have to play a near-perfect game, and we did that. I just tried not to make too many mistakes… the one who really played a brilliant match was my partner, he was really incredible," said Alex Ruiz after the match.

Ruiz and Gonzalez will face tomorrow the winner of the last match of the day between Belasteguin/Gutierrez and Lima/Nieto.
