Major surprise in Mexico – tournament favourites fall in their opener
The number two ranked couple of the WPT, Sanyo Gutierrez and Agustin Tapia crashed in their debut match at the Mexico Open against Lucas Campagnolo and Jon Sanz, who played a brilliant match to eliminate the favourites in three sets.
After the absence of the number one seeds at the WPT Mexico Open due to Alejandro Galan's injury, Agustin Tapia and Sanyo Gutierrez had become the favourite couple to win the title. Still, the debut wasn't as expected for the Argentines.
In the last 16, the newly formed pairing of Jon Sanz and Lucas Campagnolo surprised the world number twos to knock them out of the competition in their first match.
Campagnolo and Sanz controlled the match, taking the first set 6/4. When everything seemed to think that the match would be over soon, Tapia and Gutierrez reacted and turned the score of the second set around after being 1-3 down to level the match at 1-1.
But the third set would leave no doubts. Campagnolo and Sanz swept off the court to the number two, who again were disconnected from the match.
The final result was 6/4 4/6 and 6/1 in favour of the Spanish-Brazilian pair, who will face Chingotto and Garrido in the quarterfinals.
