Salazar and Triay take Malmo to leave the battle for number one red hot

ANNONS

Gemma Triay and Alejandra Salazar beat number one pairing, Ariana Sanchez and Paula Josemaria, in the final of the WPT Malmo Open to claim their third consecutive title.

The final of the WPT Malmo Open pitted the top two pairings in the women's rankings against each other, in an extremely important match for the 2022 Race. Alejandra Salazar and Gemma Triay were looking for their third consecutive title, while Ariana Sanchez and Paula Josemaria wanted to get back to winning ways to extend their lead over their immediate rivals in the rankings.

The match started with both pairings showing a high level of play, however Salazar and Triay imposed their aggressive and precise game to strike the blow, and take the first set by 6/4.

The number one pairing reacted quickly, and as soon as the second set got underway, they broke their opponents' serve to take the lead. But when the set seemed to go in Josemaria and Sanchez's favour, the duo Salazar/Triay scored a 15-0 run to turn the score around and take the set and the match by 6/4 and 7/5.

"We've both played a great tournament and the fight for the number one spot is red hot. There are two tournaments left and we won't stop believing that we can make it," said Alejandra Salazar after the match.

After winning their tenth title of the season - a WPT record - Salazar and Triay close the gap to the number ones to less than 600 points, with two tournaments still to play.

The action in the WPT women's draw will return on 22 November, with the Mexico Open, before the season comes to an end with the Barcelona Master Final.
