Top couples duel in the finals of the Malmo Open

The semifinals in Sweden are over, and the pairings that will face each other in the finals are already defined. Both in the men's and women's draw, the champions of the WPT Malmo Open will be decided between the top couples of the ranking. 

The afternoon semifinals in Sweden revealed the last two finalists of the Malmo Open. Sunday's finals will see the top two couples in the WPT rankings face each other in both the men's and women's categories.

Women’s draw

In the first semifinal of the afternoon, the world number ones, Paula Josemaria and Ariana Sanchez, faced the number three couple, Marta Ortega and Bea Gonzalez. The game started even, with both pairings looking to dominate the game, but it was Ari and Paula who struck the first blow to take the set 6/3. 

The second set saw a reaction from Ortega and Gonzalez, who surprised the number ones to take a 3-1 lead. But the number ones showed that they have personality as well as a good game, and won 5 consecutive games to take the match 6/3 6/3.

In tomorrow's final, Gemma Triay and Ale Salazar await them, in a match that promises to be key in the fight for the number one ranking.

Men’s draw

In their first semifinal as a pairing, the surprise of the tournament, Gonzalo Rubio and Alex Arroyo, faced Sanyo Gutierrez and Agustin Tapia. The match started with the favorite pair dominating the court. With a consistent game and making very few mistakes, Sanyo and Tapia took the first set 6/3.

In the second set, the world number two couple had a difficult task to overcome the Spaniards, who brought the set to a tie break. Finally, the logic of the ranking prevailed, and the top couple took the match by 6/3 7/6, in 1:45 hours of play.

In their tenth final as a couple, Tapia and Sanyo will face tomorrow the number ones, Galan and Lebron.
