Paquito Navarro takes the victory in the duel of former partners
Paquito Navarro was proclaimed winner, along with Juan Tello, of the match that pitted him against his former partner, Marin Di Nenno, in the quarterfinals of the WPT Malmo Open.
-It has been difficult to play against him. He is a great person and a great friend, said Navarro.
The draw for the Swedish tournament brought the Spaniard and the Argentine to meet again on court, but now on opposite sides and with new pairings. On one side Navarro - now on the right side of the court - with Juan Tello, and on the other Di Nenno with Coki Nieto.
-It was very difficult to play against him. I consider him a great person and a friend. It's not easy to play against a person you get along with so well, said Paquito after the match.
The match got off to a sloppy start, with both pairings trying to impose their game while getting settled on court. However, the power of Navarro and Tello's aerial game ended up deciding the first set in their favor. Di Nenno and Nieto reacted in the second set, and showing a solid game in defense took the second set by storm, 6/1 in just 30 minutes.
The final set found the Navarro/Tello pairing more organised and tactical, and taking advantage of their opponents' lack of aerial play, they took a 4/1 lead. Nieto and Di Nenno's reaction wasn't long in coming, and they would take the score to a tight 5/4. But Navarro managed to hold on to his serve, to close out the match by 6/4 1/6 and 6/4 after over two hours of play.
"We are in a new project, and we have only been here a short time. Little by little we are finding a good feeling and we are supporting each other. Surely Paco has a more complicated job because he has changed sides and I try to help him. The commitment will never lack," said Juan Tello after the match.
