Riera and Llaguno deliver a major surprise in Amsterdam
Virginia Riera and Patty Llaguno reached the semifinals of a WPT tournament for the second consecutive time, after knocking out Gemma Triay and Ale Salazar in three sets at the Amsterdam Open quarter finals.
The number five ranked couple of the WPT gave the surprise of Friday in Amsterdam, after eliminating Gemma Triay and Alejandra Salazar by 3/6 6/4 2/6, after almost three hours of match.
With a lot of patience and a very solid defensive game, Virginia Riera and Patty Llaguno managed to get the world number two pairing into their game, and after an impeccable third set they took the match to beat Triay and Salazar for the first time. Thus, Riera and Llaguno reach the semifinals for the second consecutive time.
"We managed to change our game against Gemma and Ale, and it helped us to win. I thank my partner who was the backbone of the team, she played a great game". Said Riera After the match.
Triay and Salazar have suffered the blow of losing the number one ranking: they fell in the round of 16 at the Madrid Masters and in the quarter-finals in Amsterdam.
