Knocks out world number ones in their first tournament together
In their first tournament as a couple, Marta Talavan and Sofia Araujo made history after defeating world number ones, Gemma Triay and Alejandra Salazar in the Round of 16 of the WPT Marbella Master.
The talented players Marta Talavan (27) and Sofia Araujo (27) surprised everyone. They made it through to the quarter-finals of the first Master of the season after knocking out Gemma Triay and Alejandra Salazar. The Spaniard and the Portuguese started playing together only a week ago, and in their first tournament together, they already made it to the quarter-finals, eliminating the favorites.
Gemma Triay and Alejandra Salazar started the match in the best way, taking a 5-2 lead, but that's when their opponents reacted. Supported by Araujo's power and Talavan's consistency, the number 12 couple started to play more aggressively at the net and turned the result around to take the set 7-5. The second set started evenly, but finally, the number ones managed to impose themselves, getting the final break to take the match to a third set.
The Spanish/Portuguese pair broke their opponents' first serve to take a 3-0 lead in the final set. Araujo and Talavan maintained that difference, finally taking the match by 7-5, 4-6, and 6-2 in 2 hours 24 minutes of play.
”I'm very emotional right now. It's been a very tough match, we started off playing quite badly, and I was super nervous. It's our first tournament, and we wanted to start well. We have shown what we are capable of”," said a visibly emotional Marta Talavan.
In this way, Salazar/Triay was eliminated in the Round of 16 for the first time ever.
On Friday, Talavan and Araujo will face Aranzasu Osoro and Victoria Iglesias, looking for a ticket to the semifinals.
