First Swedish men's player to win in the WPT Main Round — beats out JMD

ANNONS

A few years ago, it was impossible. Now it has happened. Swede Daniel Windahl made history today by winning a match in the main round of the World Padel Tour. He did it together with Argentinean Cristian Gutierrez.

— Three or four years ago, I would never have thought it was possible to beat Juan Martin Diaz and Agustin Gutierrez, and they played very well. Still, we had the margins today, said Daniel Windahl in the broadcast interview after the match.

He and Cristian Gutierrez received a wild card to the Danish Padel Open. And they were pitted against former world number one Juan Martin Diaz and Agustin Gutierrez, cousin of Cristian Gutierrez.

The match swung and was close but finally ended 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. This means that Daniel Windahl becomes the first men's player from Sweden to win in a main round of the World Padel Tour.

A few weeks ago, the same feat was achieved on the women's side when Sweden's Amanda Girdo with Nela Brito qualified for the Brussels Open and won the first match of the main round.

— I think all the players now see that it is possible to succeed here. We have the level to challenge players at this level, says Daniel Windahl in the WPT broadcast.

In tomorrow's Round of 16, Daniel Windahl and Cristian Gutierrez will face Lucho Capra and Maxi Sanchez.
