Coello makes history — youngest ever to take a WPT title
Fernando Belasteguin has done it again. The 42-year-old legend and his 19-year-old partner Arturo Coello win the first WPT tournament of the year in Miami. After winning the final 6-3, 7-6 over surprise pair Javi Garrido/Lucas Campagnolo.
For Fernando Belasteguin, it was far from his first win. His numbers are unbelievable. With this win, he won his 227th tournament victory in 278 finals.
It was a different story for his partner, super-talented 19-year-old Arturo Coello. The win in Miami was his first-ever victory in an Open or Masters on the World Padel Tour.
The first set was distinct by a huge Coello at the net and the experience of ”El Boss.” Coello and Belasteguin took the first set 6-3 in 47 minutes with two breaks in their favor, which gave the pair calmness.
Campagnolo was a bit more confident in the second set, and everything started more evenly. There were no breaks in the first games of the set, and everything was very even. In the 6th game, Lucas Campagnolo received a blow on the foot when he tried to go for an off-court ball, which brought in the physiotherapist and kept the game stopped for a few minutes. Finally, the set was defined in a tie-break (7-3) and 7-6 for Bela and Coello.
— I want to come back to Spain to celebrate with my whole family. I want to greet Gianluca Vacchi, who always supported us from the beginning, a beautiful person, said Arturo Coello.
— I'm going to realize what I did when I didn't play anymore. Now it's time to rest and think about what is coming. If I think about the past, the sport will take me out very quickly. If I want to play with these guys, I must improve out of respect for the sport, my family, and my profession. I want to dedicate this championship to Martin Struch, my coach from Pehuajo, who is going through an illness. I want to thank him! Enjoy it, Pehuajo!, said a very touched Bela.
