Double wins for Belgium against Great Britain: ”Aiming for the top five”

Belgium has been convincing on the men´s side and going for the group win without dropping a set against Great Britain and Lithuania. ”We are aiming for the top five,” Jeremy Gala says. On the women´s side, Belgium also took a heavy win against Great Britain. Then came Spain, which became too difficult.

Many thought that Belgium against Great Britain would be an even match. Instead, Belgium won 3-0 in matches. 

— It was not easy. The guys from England played really well. It was ten Golden Points, and we won seven or eight. There were minimal margins, Jeremy Gala says. 

Right now, the country is playing Finland. A win secures the group victory, and they are ready for the quarter-final. 

— We are aiming for the top five. If we have luck with the draw, it is possible. 

France and Italy are expected to come second and third. Sweden or Belgium will then battle it out for the semi-final places. 

— France is a great team. We are not professional. That´s the difference. The level is getting higher in Belgium, but you play with the same guys, that´s why this competition is very fun, Jeremy Gala says. 

Belgium is one of the countries that padel is exploding for the moment. 

— It´s crazy, covid helped padel a lot to grow. It was the only sport allowed, so many squash players and tennis players began to play padel. 

Do you think Belgium is a top-nation in padel in the future? 

— I hope so. We need to invest in great coaches, Jeremy Gala says. 

On the women´s side, Belgium won their first match against Great Britain. Yesterday, they faced Spain and, as expected, they lose in three matches. 

The Belgian player Anso Mstch faced the World Padel Tour stars Bea Gonzalez and Eli Amatriain. 

— For me, the difference between them and us is the variation in smashes and position. They always know what they should do and not make mistakes, Anso Mstch says. 

Their aim is already achieved through the win against Great Britain. 

— We were aiming for number 8, but now we are already there. Normally Spain does not lose against Great Britain, Anso Mstch says.
