Two European Championships announced in Spain this year
Yesterday, Spain's squads were selected for the International Padel Federation´s European Championships in Marbella from 28 June to 4 July.
But the competing federation, The Federation of European Padel (FEPA), did not want to be worse. So last night, FEPA announced that there would be another European Championship this year, also in Spain. The venue is Bilbao in Basque Country and will be held from the 4th of October to the 9th of October.
This means that the competing federations will continue to have a conflict with each other and that there will be two championships this year. Just like in 2019 when two European Championship were arranged in Italy and Portugal.
Earlier this year, Luigi Carraro, the president of FIP, said to the Swedish site PadelDirekt about the possibilities with two Championships this year.
— I'll be frank with you, I don't think there will be two European Championships. We only have one official European Championship, and it will be played in Spain (Marbella) in June/July. 19 countries have already registered to play in the European Championship. A month ago, we received a letter from CAS clearly stating that the only official European Championship that will be played is the one organized by FIP. What happened in 2019 was not good and only affected the padel. This European Championship will be a fantastic event.
And about FIP:s relationship with FEPA.
— I don't talk to them. What I know is that Spain has left this organization. So we are focused on ourselves.
All major nations participate in the FIP European Championships in Marbella, except the Portuguese team on the men's side.
It is not yet clear which nations will compete in the FEPA Championships. However, they announce on their website that more information will be available soon.
