Sanyo: ”They will be the team to beat this year”
— I think our playing style is better in courts like Vigo than Madrid, Sanyo says.
Sanyo Gutierrez and Fernando Belasteguin did not manage to repeat the success from Madrid when the team went out in the quarter-final against this season two-time finalist Franco Stupaczuk and Alex Ruiz in Alicante Open.
Despite that, Sanyo Gutierrez believes that the much slower courts in Alicante and Vigo are better suited for the team than those in Madrid.
— In the end, we won in the fastest courts in Madrid and went out early in the slower courts in Alicante. But I think our playing style is better in courts like Vigo and Alicante than in Madrid, Sanyo Gutierrez says to Padel Alto during his preparation for the upcoming tournament.
The courts in Vigo will be quite similar to those in Alicante, but they can be different depending on the temperature.
— It is very similar to Alicante. It will be much slower than Madrid because of the height over the sea, Sanyo Gutierrez says.
Many padel-followers were expecting Sanyo Gutierrez and Fernando Belasteguin to win at the slow courts, that more powerful players like Alejandro Galan and Juan Lebron would have some problems.
But Alejandro Galan and Juan Lebron were convincing the whole week in Alicante Open and impressively won the final with 6-0, 6-4.
— As every year in the first tournaments, there are many surprises. We ended up winning the first tournament and Lebron and Galan the second. In the end, I think they will be the team to beat this year. They are always a team that maintains a high level, Sanyo Gutierrez says.
Last week, Sanyo Gutierrez and Fernando Belasteguin were preparing for Vigo Open in Sweden, where the padel has grown a lot in the latest years.
— I think everyone has treated me very well, and it is nice. I think padel is strong in Sweden. For us, it is a pleasure to help padel grow in this area, Sanyo Gutierrez says.
The fifth-ranked pair, Federico Chingotto and Juan Tello were also in Sweden during last week. After the draw of Vigo Open, it is decided that the two teams can face each other already in a quarter-final.
— We have to keep going in the same direction as before. It will be an open tournament, and I don’t know who will win or lose, but we have to play along the same line, Sanyo says.
On Thursday, the second-seeded team enters the tournament's Round of 16. They will face the winners in the match between Lucas Bergamini/Lucas Campagnolo and Ernesto Moreno/Denis Perino.
